ASK TOM: Chicago’s top 10 coldest high temps on record

Dear Tom,

What are the top 10 coldest high temperatures in Chicago weather history?

Kevin Kelly Arlington Heights

Dear Kevin,

It’s been nearly two decades since the city has been hit with such an intense arctic blast, but it has certainly happened before.

Chicago’s top 10 coldest calendar-day high temperatures since 1870.

-11º Dec. 24, 1983

-11º Jan. 18, 1994

-10º Jan. 25, 1897

-8º  Feb. 9,  1899

-7º  Jan. 16, 1977

-6º  Jan. 4,  1884

-6º  Feb. 9,  1933

-6º  Jan. 29  1966

-6º  Dec. 23, 1983

-5º  Feb. 3,  1966 (most recent of 6 occurrences)

Despite the fact that  Monday’s midday temperatures are expected to be double-digit below zero, the  day’s official high will likely  be the midnight temperatures,  a few degrees below zero.

  1. If the forecast is already predicting similar weather for tomorrow should CPS be announcing school closures early instead of waiting until later in the evenings when they already know that the temperatures could potentially be worse than today?

  2. Appreciating the time and effort you put into your blog and detailed information you provide.

It’s nice to come across a blog every once in a while that
isn’t the same outdated rehashed material. Wonderful read!
