A ferocious early-season blizzard has brought travel in western South Dakota to a standstill. Former WGN weather intern Jon Chambers, now a forecaster at Rapid City sent along these shots. The snow is deep and the winds are high with gusts more than 50 mph. Trees, still in leaf, have been damaged from the wind and the weight of the snow which has topped 30 inches in areas near Lead. There is quite a bit of thunder-snow occurring with this system.
