Dry air holds off freezing rain this morning in Chicago area

A check of the radar pictured on the right side of this page shows precipitation spreading east-northeast over the state. As the moisture aloft meets the very dry air over northeast Illinois, it will take time for the dry layer to saturate and the rain to finally reach the ground. Temperatures are slowly on the rise – at 10AM most observing points in the Chicago area reported 28 degrees – rising about a degree/hour since 7AM.

The saturation-aloft process has completed over western and southern Illinois with freezing rain reported at Quincy, Galesburg, Moline, Macomb, Jacksonville, Springfield and points farther south and west. The Freezing Rain Advisory for northern and central Illinois and Indiana late this morning and afternoon and Winter Weather Advisory for much of Wisconsin and Lower Michigan for this afternoon and tonight remain in effect.
