Coldest air to arrive tonight – Wind Chill Advisory in effect 6PM this evening until 9AM Tuesday morning

Chicago-area temperatures early this morning dropped into the upper single digits to lower teens, and when combined with northwest winds gusting to 25 miles per hour resulted in wind chills from zero to as low as -15 degrees. However even colder air is still on the way and the Chicago National Weather Service Office has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for tonight into Tuesday morning.

The center of a huge elongated frigid high pressure air mass that extends from Alaska and Canada’s Northwest Territory all the way southeast through the U.S. northern plains into the Tennessee River Valley will not reach our area until Tuesday. The core of coldest air will track across Lake Superior and Upper Michigan tonight and Tuesday.

Chicago-area temperatures should fall below zero sometime after midnight tonight with lowest readings expected just after sunrise Tuesday morning. As the center of high pressure approaches, winds will weaken a little, but even so west to northwest winds 10 to 20 miles per hour will accompany these early morning sub-zero readings producing -15 to -25-degree wind chills over much of the metro area into northwest Indiana.
