Thunderstorms to culminate a day of unseasonable early-December warmth

Scattered thunderstorms are fast-approaching the Chicago Metro area this evening as cold front moves into the area ending a day of extraordinary early -December warmth that saw Chicago temperatures reach 70 degrees for only the third time in December since Chicago weather records began in late 1870.  The thunderstorms may be accompanied by small hail and gusty winds. A tornado warning was issued earlier this evening for Ogle County but that storm has weakened and the warning is no longer in effect.

Today high official high of 70 degrees at O'Hare International Airport  fell one degree short of the days record high of 71 degrees set on December 3, 1970. The city's only other December 70-degree plus reading was a high of 71 degrees on reached  December 2, 1982.
