A warm front that was poised to pass through the Chicago area Friday night bringing a mostly sunny and unseasonably warm day to the Chicago area Saturday. Obviously that did not work out. While the first warm front moved into southern Wisconsin, a secondary warm front developed across northern Illinois triggering a round of showers and thunderstorms that swept across the Chicago area early this afternoon, bringing heavy downpours, gusty winds and even some hail.
Large hail fell at Bolingbrook where the stones reached 1.5 inches in diameter (ping-pong ball size). Other areas receiving significant hail included penny-size hail at Naperville, and nickel- size hail at Oak Brook. Many locations around the Chicago Metro area reported pea to marble size hail.
While the city sits in clouds and lingering showers with temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s, areas Downstate are enjoying a mostly sunny Saturday afternoon with temperatures in the lower 70s and gust south-southwest winds. As the afternoon wear on, showers should end in the Chicago area with some clearing expected allowing temperatures to climb into the middle and upper 60s with a few areas even reaching 70 degrees.
