When is the next time there will be a full moon on Halloween?
— Barry S.
Contrary to the classic images of witches flying across the face of the full moon and ghostly shadows cast by the light of the full moon, the moon can be in any phase on Oct. 31, depending on how the date interacts with the 29.5-day lunar cycle. A Halloween full moon is actually rather rare, the most recent one occurring in 2001 and before that in 1955. The next occurrence will be in 2020, followed by four more this century in 2039, 2058, 2077 and 2096. It is interesting to note that any Halloween full moon will be the second full moon in October, making it, by popular definition, a blue moon. And since October’s first full moon would be the harvest moon, a Halloween full moon will always be the hunters moon.
