ASK TOM WHY: What Chicago suburbs are at the same latitude as the southernmost part of Canada?

Dear Tom,

What Chicago suburbs are at the same latitude as the southernmost part of Canada?

— Tom Cechner, Lockport

Dear Tom,

While the vast majority of Canadian territory lies far to the north of Chicago, there are portions of Canada that are located as far south as Chicago. Surprisingly, it is Midway Airport on Chicago’s Southwest Side, with a latitude of 41.78 degrees N, that is almost identical to the southernmost portion of Canada. That’s small Pelee Island, in western Lake Erie north of Sandusky, Ohio. When considering Canada’s southernmost major city — Windsor, Ontario, located across the Detroit River from Detroit — a Chicago-area landmark sharing a similar latitude (42.1 degrees N) would encompass areas near Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling.
