As noted in an earlier blog, January was the 4th warmest on record for the contiguous United States. The National Climatic Data Center has more details on what some are calling "June-uary" because of the remarkable warmth we witnessed in what is typically our coldest month of the year. Their graphic below shows just how much warmer than average most of the US was during January.
Here are some amazing individual city stats for January, 2012:
St. Louis-The average temperature in January 2012 was 38.1 F. This was 7.5 F warmer than the 1941-2012 average, the 4th warmest January on record (1941-2012).
Dallas-The average temperature in January 2012 was 51.0 F. This was 5.3 F warmer than the 1948-2012 average, the 5th warmest January on record (1948-2012).
International Falls-The average temperature in January 2012 was 14.0 F. This was 11.6 F warmer than the 1948-2012 average, the 3th warmest January on record (1948-2012).
Wausau-The average temperature in January 2012 was 20.6 F. This was 7.4 F warmer than the 1948-2012 average, the 5th warmest January on record (1948-2012).
Chicago-The average temperature in January 2012 was 30.2 F. This was 7.7 F warmer than the 1958-2012 average, the 5th warmest January on record (1958-2012).
Our streak of 19 consecutive days with temperatures above average ended yesterday. Arctic air arrives today on gusty northerly winds setting us up for the coldest weekend so far this winter. From the "could be worse" department.... Extreme cold warnings were posted today for parts of northern Minnesota and North Dakota where wind chills will dip to -30° to -40°.
