Morning rush slowed by snow, rain and drizzle

UPDATE 8:45AM:  Temperatures have risen 2 to 3 degrees in the past 30 minutes changing much of the snow over to drizzle.  Road conditions have improved considerably.  At 8:45AM, the temperature at both O'Hare and Midway stands at 36 degrees, 4 degrees above the freezing mark.

UPDATE 7:45AM:  Snow continues to decrease in coverage and intensity at this hour.  The precipitation has already tapered to drizzle or flurries in many locations.  Here are a few of the latest snowfall reports from across the region:

2.5"  Princeton, IL (95 miles west of downtown Chicago)
1.0"  Elburn, IL
1.0"  New Lenox
1.0"  De Kalb
1.0"  Valparaiso, IN
0.9"  St. Charles
0.8"  Homer Glen
0.6"  Algonquin
0.6"  Batavia
0.4"  Huntley
0.3"  Chicago-Midway
0.0"  Chicago-Loop

UPDATE 7:15AM:   Several spotty bands of snow continue to move across northern Illinois this morning. Radar indicates the heaviest snow is located over the southwest and west suburbs.  Some untreated roads are slick.  Accumulation will be limited to 1 inch or less.

UPDATE 6:30AM:  Snow on Chicago area roadways has resulted in numerous accidents this morning.  

Hardest hit have been expressways in the southern suburbs. Numerous accidents and spin-outs have occurred on the Stevenson (I-55) and Bishop Ford Freeways.  Ramps and overpasses are especially susceptible to the slushy conditions.

UPDATE 5:30AM:  Snow is starting to accumulate across the Chicago area as bands of light to moderate snow sweep through northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.  Here are a few of the reports that have come into the WGN Weather Center this AM:

0.3"  Countryside

5:00AM: What started out as a rain-snow mix overnight has changed over to mostly snow at 5AM.  

Air and surface temperatures outside of the city and away from the lake have dropped into the lower 30s, and a few slushy and slick spots are possible on untreated roads and sidewalks. 

Up to 1" of accumulation is possible by 9AM.
