Mild air making a brief return to Chicago area

By Meteorologist Paul Merzlock

The coming week will start with a break in our current cold snap before another push of polar air arrives on Tuesday. The transition to mild air Sunday and Sunday night will be tempered by brisk south winds that may gust to 30 mph at times. Rising dewpoint temperatures will overspread snow-covered areas of northern Illinois and Indiana. In response, low clouds, fog, and perhaps a period of freezing drizzle are expected to develop late Sunday night into early Monday. Any precipitation Monday through Monday evening will be in the form of rain. Late Monday night and Tuesday polar air will return in force as blustery north winds develop. These air mass transitions will also bring with them a chance of snow. Snow on Tuesday is expected to yield little, if any accumulation. Snow chances increase again Thursday into Friday as a more significant push of mild air begins to override slowly retreating polar. This second snow chance may produce a more significant accumulation.
