The United Nation's World Meteorological Organization released a report yesterday that substantiates the claim from most climatologists that the world is warming. Even so, some of the latest figures that were released are alarming.
Here are some of the more startling statistics:
- The past decade ties for the world's hottest on record
- 13 of the warmest years globally have occurred within the past 15 years
- 2011 now ranks as the 10th warmest since accurate records were kept in 1850
- The extent of Arctic sea ice has shrunk to the second-lowest level on record
The report was released during the two-week U.N. climate conference now being held in South Africa. In 2012 the pledges of 37 countries to follow the Kyoto Protocol will expire. Negotiations are being held in an effort to possibly extend and even expand those 1997 treaty commitments.
