With widespread freezing temperatures across the Chicago metro area, Friday's official low temperature reading at the O'Hare observation site should bottom out well below 32 degrees --- marking the first time readings there have dropped below that mark since April 1st. It also marks the latest in the season the first 32-degree temperature has been observed at that site since it was established in 1959.
Warm-up begins
After clouds and snow flurries held Thursday's high temperatures in the lower 40s, abundant sunshine and southerly breezes will start Chicago back on the road to a warming trend Friday. Southerly flow should continue into the weekend with a gradual increase in cloudiness---the only thing holding temperatures back from reaching the 60-degree mark Saturday and Sunday.
Showers could occur either side of a cold front projected to pass through the area later Sunday. Temperatures could moderate a little next week, but with the core of a west to east-flowing upper level jet stream just to our north, readings should still average close to or slightly above normal.
