What day has the greatest, and least, likelihood of precipitation?

Dear Tom,
What day of the year has the highest frequency of precipitation and what day of the year has the lowest frequency?

--John D'Chicio

Dear John,
Chicago's precipitation records include 140 full years of data (from Jan. 1, 1871, through Dec. 31, 2010), a period of 51,134 days. We scanned that data base and found that measurable precipitation (0.01 inch or more) has fallen on 17,407 days, or 34 percent of the days. The "wettest" days of the year -- the days that have the greatest likelihood of precipitation -- occur in spring; the "driest days" occur in late summer and early autumn. The single day on which precipitation has occurred most often is March 26; on that date measurable precipitation fell on 69 days out of a possible 140 days, or 49 percent of the days. Precipitation is least likely on Aug. 31 and Oct. 28, with 28 wet days, or 20 percent of the days.
