Tim's Weather World: Kinder & gentler winter ahead?

The Farmer's Almanac winter forecast is out and it is calling for a milder winter overall this year for the United States at least compared to last year's winter. Winter 2009-2010 saw snow in 49 states and colder than normal weather had iguanas falling from trees in Florida.

The forecast for the Midwest is "cold & very snowy." Last winter was the 6th snowiest on record for Chicago with 52.4 inches and the 45th coldest with an average temperature of 25.1 degrees.

The 2011 edition of the almanac is also forecasting frigid weather for much of the eastern half of the country while it should be a warmer than average winter for the western half of the country.

That seems to contradict the "official" forecast from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center. Their models have the Northwest colder than normal and the mid-Atlantic through the Southeast milder than average.

Bring on the cold weather and snow. I love winter. I hope this is the last hot spell. Meterological autumn begings Wednesday!!

Are you kidding? they can't predict weather 5 days from now and you're telling me they can predict the weather 2 seasons from now? Who's buying this crap?

This is NOT the OLD Farmer's Almanac. That one will be released later in September

Stops ruin my last summer days

This is a pretty useless article. "very cold and snowy" yet it's supposed to be a mild winter?

With all the rain and moisture in the air for most of 2010, I knew the prediction would be for a snowy winter. Dang.

How is "cold & very snowy," Kinder & gentler???

Milder winter?......

Don't worry your gas won't go down !!!!

In fact it'll probably increase !!!

If I'm wrong...show me where.

And like others have mentioned......it's Monday and they can't tell what the weather will be like Tueday.

Global Warming will make it warm and sunny with a chance of rain every few days....

This will be better than the HOT summer we have had. Lew

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Either way, both the NWS and almanac predict higher than average snowfall for Chicago

Where will Al Gore be spending his mild winter? Spending his money from duping people into believing in man-made global warming. I hope he gets frostbite where the sun doesn't shine.
