Area drying out, but afternoon sun could help fire up more storms

Rain has ended across the Chicago area and northern Illinois after a wild night of thunderstorms that brought torrential rainfall and resultant flooding.

Sunshine, currently breaking through the thinning clouds is a mixed blessing. On the plus side, it will help initiate the drying-out process. But on the negative side, it will help re-energize a volatile, moisture-laden atmosphere and could initiate one last round of thunderstorms later this afternoon as a cold front pushes through the area.

The entire Chicago area remains under a slight risk for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening until the cold front passes, but latest information is hinting that severe weather, should it develop, would primarily target the south and east portions of the metro area.

If additional thunderstorms do develop along the cold front this afternoon, they would be fairly quick movers and would not be likely to drop large amounts of precipitation like last night's "training" thunderstorms.

Some additional precipitation totals from last night's deluge: Berwyn 6.99 inches; St. Charles 5.39 inches; Clarendon Hills 4.50 inches; Arlington Heights 3.45 inches; Northbrook 3.15 inches.

If you have photos of the flooding in your area, send them here
